Esta região tem potencialidades diversas, entre as quais:

– Incluiu-se no território com a maior reserva de água doce de origem totalmente nacional (v.g. as bacias hidrográficas do Mondego e Vouga);
– Apresenta uma elevada esperança de vida à nascença: 5ª NUT 3 a nível nacional (3ª na RC)
– Detém um sector exportador dinâmico: 3ª NUT 3 a nível nacional (2ª na RC) com maior Intensidade Exportadora; 5ª NUT 3 a nível nacional (1ª na RC) com maior Propensão de Exportação de Bens de Alta Tecnologia.
